OTTAWA – The TELUS-Telecommunications
Workers Union labour dispute had dragged on for far too long
while the Minister of Labour watched from the sidelines, said
Opposition Labour Critic, Ed Komarnicki, today. Negotiations
thus far, have been underway for five years.
The minister had the power to
involve himself more extensively pursuant to the Canada Labour
Code but refused to do so, leaving TELUS workers feeling abandoned
during the protracted negotiations. Komarnicki is pleased to see,
however, that both parties were able to achieve a negotiated settlement,
notwithstanding the lack of action on the minister’s part.
“I commend the parties for
their hard work in bringing this long outstanding dispute to a
negotiated settlement,” said Komarnicki. “It is now
up to the membership to hold a ratification vote and I am hopeful
that a settlement to the best interests of both parties will be
reached.”
Komarnicki would like to express
his appreciation to each of the parties’ presidents for
involving themselves to ensure the success of the negotiations.
