Member of Parliament, Ed Komarnicki expressed his dismay at the
Federal Government's National Gun Registry in light of the shooting
tragedies that have taken place in Toronto in recent days.
"The shootings that have taken place in Toronto are a clear
sign that the Federal Gun Registry doesn't work-it never has,"
said Komarnicki. "While the registry has the intent of cracking
down on the use of weapons for criminal purposes, the Government
should learn by now that criminals don't register guns."
For two weeks gun fire has been ringing in Toronto, often in public
places. Since the summer began, there have been at least 33 shootings
in Toronto alone, killing 13 people and injuring another 24, including
a four year old boy who was sitting outside his home and caught
in the middle of a cross shooting just last week.
"The problem we are facing is multi-faceted, Komarnicki added.
"What the Liberal Government needs to understand is that
spending billions of dollars to register guns is not part of the
solution."
Komarnicki went on to suggest that federal money would be better
spent on strengthening national law enforcement and border security,
or investing in social programs in regions where gun related crime
is high.
"Until this government gets its priorities straight and effectively
manages its finances in the area of gun control, the problem we
are currently facing isn't going to be resolved," Komarnicki
claimed.
"The gun registry needs to be scrapped and federal spending
needs to be allocated to areas that will bring real solutions."
