In Close Vote Liberal, NDP and Bloc
Coalition Forces
Long Gun Registry on All Lawful Firearm Owners
Ottawa (September 22, 2010) –
Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain,
made the following statement today regarding the scrap the long
gun registry vote held in Ottawa on Wednesday, September 22nd.
“In a close 153-151 vote, the Liberal, NDP and Bloc Coalition
have forced the continuance of the long gun registry on farmers,
duck hunters and indeed all lawful firearms owners.
“The vote on the long gun registry did not deal with a
complicated issue. It was either up or down, in or out with
the long gun registry. Their vote was disrespectful to all lawful
firearms owners and in particular rural Canadians who won’t
forget what the Liberals and NDP did to them. They will get
the message loud and clear in the next election.
“The long gun registry was a mistake in the first place
and simply put, should be scrapped.
“There is no correlation between a crime being committed
and whether a long gun is registered or not. Any supposed connection
is a fallacy that gives some a sense of false security.
“In fact, the long gun registry has been a colossal waste
of money and a source of inconvenience and annoyance to many
hunters, farmers and law abiding citizens. It needs to go at
the first opportunity.
“The issue isn’t over. We have come closer than
we ever have before to scrapping the registry. If we continue
to work with and rally local communities, including frontline
police officers and those chiefs who support us, we will abolish
the despised long gun registry once and for all.”
