Prime Minister Stephen Harper Tours Flooded Farmland Following
$450 Million Acreage Payment Announcement

Estevan (July 8, 2010) –Prairie farmers and producers hard hit with excessive moisture and flooding this growing season will receive some extra help from federal and provincial governments. The Governments of Canada, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, are making up to $450 million available through the AgriRecovery Program. Producers will be able to receive a $30 per acre direct payment through the program to help protect, rehabilitate and manage affected cropland. This will represent the largest one time provincial agriculture disaster response in Saskatchewan’s history.

“Many producers struggled to get the 2010 crop in the ground and those that were able to seed have seen their crops suffer due to excessive moisture,” said Komarnicki. “I like the fact that the program involves a short two page application form that is easy to understand. In fact, Saskatchewan Crop Insurance customers will not have to apply unless established crop was flooded between June 20 and July 31.”

The payment is being administered through the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC). The $30 per eligible acre payment is available to all Saskatchewan producers who could not get their land seeded by June 20 or had a crop flooded on or before July 31. Even producers not enrolled in Crop Insurance can apply for payment.

“The Prime Minister’s visit to flooded areas shows he cares about what is happening in Western Canada and is committed to working with the provinces to make sure farmers get the help they need,” said Komarnicki. “We are quite fortunate in this part of the province compared to other areas. Let’s hope that the crop that is in produces better than expected and that we end up with a decent harvest.”

More information on this per acre payment including application forms can be found at www.saskcropinsurance.com. Applications are also available at R.M. offices. The application deadline is September 30, 2010
