FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS SET ASIDE $4,250,000 TO SUPPORT UPGRADES TO HIGHWAY 39 NEAR WEYBURN
Weyburn, Saskatchewan, February 11, 2010 – Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minster of Human Resources and Skills Development and to the Minister of Labour, and the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Weyburn-Big Muddy and Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, announced today that the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan together have set aside $4,250,000 in funding to support upgrades to Highway 39 near Weyburn.
“I am pleased that the federal and provincial governments are partnering together to make these improvements to Highway 39,” said Komarnicki. “These investments in Saskatchewan’s infrastructure will help boost our regional economy and are essential as we lay the foundation for our economy to grow into the future.”

The federal and provincial governments are accelerating infrastructure spending across Saskatchewan providing funding to provincial and municipal construction-ready projects. Through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund the federal government is providing $116 million in funding for 150 projects across Saskatchewan. With provincial and municipal contributions included, the overall investment grows to more than $275 million. Projects being funded include several highway and local road improvements, as well as wastewater initiatives in many communities across the province.
Under its Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is allocating $12 billion to infrastructure projects across the country. This is further complemented by an earlier commitment of $33 billion to infrastructure.
Canada and Saskatchewan are working together to create jobs and boost the economy while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are delivered quickly and efficiently.

CANADA AND SASKATCHEWAN ANNOUNCE
15 NEW INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the
federal government has established a new $4 billion Infrastructure
Stimulus Fund (ISF) that provides funding to provincial, territorial
and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects.
Funding is available for projects that can be completed by March
31, 2011. This initiative is structured to flow funding and
get shovels in the ground quickly.
On January 29, 2010, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan announced 15 new infrastructure projects worth $45.8 million in funding. The federal portion of this funding, which amounts to more than $19.8 million, comes from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Government of Saskatchewan is setting aside more than $16.4 million. The rest of the funding is being provided by municipal governments.

Taking into account the funding being announced, since the launch of the Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada has committed a total of $116 million towards 150 projects in Saskatchewan under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
As an example, in North Battleford, in September of last year, we announced federal funding of $12.6 million for a total of 43 shovel-ready projects throughout the province.
