Moosomin Benefits as Federal Government
Provides More
Recreational Infrastructure Funding to Town
Moosomin, Saskatchewan – Today, Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, met with members of the Moosomin Town Council to discuss plans to proceed with the construction of Moosomin’s new multi-purpose community recreation facility. Ed Komarnicki, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced that the federal government is allocating an additional $53,000 in funding for the construction of the town’s new facility. The funding is being provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and is in addition to the $1.25 million contribution made by the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan that was announced last fall.
“The Recreation Infrastructure Canada program has been an important component of our government’s Economic Action Plan and I am pleased that the Town of Moosomin has been able to benefit from this program in such a significant way,” said Komarnicki. “With work commencing on this new multi-purpose facility this spring, I know that this facility will be a tremendous benefit to the community and will provide a venue that can be enjoyed by Moosomin and area for years to come.”
Shovels will be breaking ground on the Town of Moosomin’s new multi-purpose centre later this month. The facility will encourage greater participation in physical activity and will provide a much needed venue for local and regional events. The project is estimated to cost $2.3 million.
Moosomin’s new multi-purpose community recreation facility will replace the town’s existing facility. The new facility will be adjoined to the existing Communiplex Skating Arena. This project will create a physical recreation facility that will meet the demands of the growing population in the region and will expand the number and types of physical activities offered at the current facility.
“With our rapidly rising population, changing demographics and increased programming demands, this project allows us to take great strides to meet those demands,” said Mike Schwean, Recreation Director for the Town of Moosomin. “This project truly provides our region with a first class ‘One Stop Shopping’ centre where the recreation/ leisure/cultural opportunities are absolutely endless.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
RInC is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative in the four western provinces.
