Liberal Leader Opposes Conservative Private Members’ Bill
to Scrap the Long Gun Registry and Orders All Liberal Members
to do the Same
Ottawa (April 20, 2010)— Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, today took issue with the position of Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff who is once again turning his back on rural Canadians by clearly stating he still supports the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry. The Liberal Leader also said he will be ordering his Liberal MPs to do the same, including the eight Liberal MPs who voted for Conservative Member of Parliament Candice Hoeppner’s Private Members Bill C-391 at second reading.
“What exactly does he have against farmers and duck hunters? I doubt anyone in the West supports the gun registry. The Liberals will pay a huge price out West for this kind of action,” said Komarnicki.
The Liberals along with their coalition partners in the Bloc Québécois and NDP have also stacked the Public Safety committee with pro-long gun registry MPs who will attempt to play procedural and political games at committee.
The choice is clear for all Liberal MPs and for that matter for the Bloc and NDP – they can either vote to scrap the long-gun registry, or they can vote to keep the long-gun registry.
“It’s as simple as that,”
said Komarnicki. “No shifting, no sliding and no room
to turn. You are either for it or against it.”
