Scrapping the Wasteful Long-Gun Registry
Ottawa- Today, the Conservative Party of Canada launched an advertising campaign to raise awareness about Bill C-391, Candice Hoeppner’s Private Member’s Bill to scrap the long-gun registry. The campaign includes a series of special radio commercials urging local voters to call their M.P. and make their voice heard on this important issue.
A second-reading vote to scrap the long-gun registry will take place on November 4, 2009. The government expects the vote to be very close. Every vote will matter.
Both Jack Layton and Michael Ignatieff have been unequivocal in their support for the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry. To this end, Conservatives hope that individual Liberal and New Democrat MPs will stand up and vote to protect the local way of life for their constituents.
The Conservative Party is running this campaign because many of these MPs think that they can have it both ways: wanting to scrap the long-gun registry when at home in their ridings, but supporting to keep it when they're in Ottawa.
“This is a great opportunity for all rural Members of Parliament to stand up for farmers, duck hunters and indeed all Canadians,” said Komarnicki. “The opposition MPs can’t have it both ways any longer. The issue is very narrow and on November 4th the opposition MPs will be put to the test.”
“This will be a critical vote that I hope succeeds to get the Bill to committee,” concluded Komarnicki.
