Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest $1.25 Million in Moosomin’s Recreational Infrastructure
Moosomin, Saskatchewan- October 16, 2009 – The Town of Moosomin will move forward with the construction of a new multi-purpose community recreation facility thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Don Toth, Speaker of the Saskatchewan Legislature and MLA for Moosomin, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, and Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding for the construction of a new multi-purpose recreation facility in the Town of Moosomin that will strengthen economic opportunities for the town and improve the town’s recreational infrastructure.
“I am pleased to see the co-operative involvement of our provincial government with the federal government insuring infrastructure dollars are being used to enhance the health and quality of life in our communities,” said Toth. “Not only will today’s announcement create jobs and new opportunities, it will also address the long standing need for a new community centre in a growing area of the province.”
“Our government’s investment in a new multi-purpose facility for the Town of Moosomin through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program is great news for the residents of Moosomin and area,” said Komarnicki. “Moosomin is a growing community. This new facility will not only encourage greater participation in physical activity, it will provide a venue for local and regional events and give the town the recreational infrastructure it needs as it builds for the future.”
Funding of $500,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan is contributing $750,000 and the Town of Moosomin will fund the balance of the project for a total estimated project cost of $2.0 million.
Moosomin’s new multi-purpose community recreation facility will replace the town’s existing facility which is badly deteriorated. The new facility will be adjoined to the existing Communiplex Skating Arena. This project will create a physical recreation facility that will meet the demands of the growing population in the region and will expand the number and types of physical activities offered at the current facility. It will also reduce operating and maintenance costs. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2010.
“The federal and provincial support received under the recently approved RInC grant for our new multi-purpose facility in Moosomin is wonderful,” said Larry Miskiman, Mayor of the Town of Moosomin. “We have been saving for this new facility for a number of years and now with this announcement our long-term community need has become a reality.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in RinC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
RInC is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative in the four western provinces.
