Liberals Turn their Backs on Unemployed
Canadians
and Vote for an Election that Nobody Wants
Ottawa- Today the Liberals placed a motion of non-confidence before the House and voted to force an unnecessary election that Canadians do not want. Earlier in the week the Liberals voted against Bill C-50, legislation that will provide nearly $1 billion of assistance to long-tenured workers who have worked hard, paid their dues, seldom used employment insurance and now find themselves without work through no fault of their own.
“I really have a hard time understanding where their head is at,” said Komarnicki. “Their tactics make little or no sense. While we work to improve the economy and provide jobs, the Liberals are doing everything possible to take our country to the polls, a step that would hinder our fragile economic recovery.”
In fact Michael Ignatieff and his Liberals have opposed every key measure of the Economic Action Plan since Parliament returned this fall:
• They voted against the recession-fighting
Home Renovation Tax Credit;
• They voted against enhancing the Working Income Tax
Benefit;
• They voted against extending tax deferral to farmers
in drought and flood regions to help farmers cope with extreme
weather conditions; and
• They voted against extra weeks of EI benefits for long-tenured
workers.
While the Government’s number one priority is Canada’s economic recovery and helping those hit hardest by the global recession, Michael Ignatieff and his Liberal party have voted against all of these measures for no other reason than for political gain and to force a wasteful opportunistic election.
“The Liberals are quickly losing all
credibility with Canadians,” said Komarnicki. “First
they walked away from the negotiating table this summer, then
they turned their backs on unemployed Canadians by voting against
additional benefits for long-tenured workers and now they have
voted for an unnecessary election that nobody wants.”
