Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest in
Recreational Infrastructure in Bengough

Bengough, Saskatchewan – The Town of Bengough is moving forward with renovations to their local swimming pool thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Today, the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Recreation and MLA for Weyburn- Big Muddy, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs and Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding for renovations to Bengough’s pool that will improve the town’s recreational infrastructure.

"This announcement today again shows our commitment to continue building on our economic momentum in Saskatchewan," said Minister Duncan. “This project demonstrates Saskatchewan is moving forward with greater recreational opportunities for communities across our province.”

“This investment in Bengough’s swimming pool through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program will benefit the entire community,” said Komarnicki. “Upgrades to these facilities will not only encourage greater participation in physical activity in the community but also greater use of the facilities.”

Funding of $19,000 is being provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan is providing a matching contribution and the Town of Bengough will fund the balance for a total estimated project cost of $57,000.

Upgrades to Bengough swimming pool will include resurfacing the pool. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2010.

“The Community of Bengough very much appreciates this funding from the federal and provincial governments that is allowing our town to make some much needed repairs to our local swimming pool,” said Dennis Mazenc, Mayor of the Town of Bengough. “The swimming pool creates a lot of traffic in the Bengough community over the summer which means more dollars spent at the businesses in town.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in RinC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.

RInC is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative in the four western provinces.
