CIVIC EVENTS CENTRE IN ESTEVAN
Infrastructure investments to create jobs and get the economy
moving
Estevan, Saskatchewan, May 2, 2009 – Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain and Doreen Eagles, MLA for Estevan today announced that the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan have approved funding for the New Civic Events Centre in Estevan under the first intake of the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund. This Events Centre will create jobs, stimulate the economy and improve sport and culture infrastructure.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that infrastructure investments are essential to stimulating the economy and creating jobs” said Ed Komarnicki, M.P. “The New Civic Events Centre is a fine example of how we are supporting modern infrastructure that encourages greener, healthier and more active communities.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that multi-purpose facilities are at the heart of every community in our great province,” said Doreen Eagles, MLA for Estevan. “Investment in this Events Centre will support Estevan by creating more jobs and providing a better place for families to be active in their community.”
The New Civic Events Centre will provide the region and the City of Estevan with a state of the art facility that will allow a year-round venue for junior and minor hockey, indoors sports such as lacrosse, gymnastics, track and field, soccer, as well as figure skating, curling and other indoor sporting events.
Canada’s contribution to the New Civic Events Centre is sourced from the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund. Under the first intake, Estevan will receive a joint federal and provincial investment of $10.2 million for the construction of the Events Centre. The total cost of the Events Centre is $20.6 million. The Communities Component supports the infrastructure needs of communities of less than 100,000.
These investments are part of the Government of Canada’s and Province of Saskatchewan’s commitment to help stimulate the economy, maintain stability and keep Saskatchewan working during the economic downturn. Under the Building Canada plan, the Government of Canada will be investing more than $755.2 million in infrastructure in Saskatchewan between 2007 and 2014.
