Moosomin to Receive Over $2.2 Million in Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Funding for Sewage Lagoon Upgrade
Moosomin, Saskatchewan, June
29, 2009 – Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose
Mountain and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human
Resources and Skills Development and to the Minister of Labour,
and the Honourable Don Toth, Member of the Legislative Assembly
for Moosomin and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, announced
today that the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have each
set aside $1,127,666.00 to support upgrades to the sewage lagoon
in Moosomin.
“Our Government is making smart investments that will
inject additional capital into our economy and keep people working
during these tough economic times while at the same time meeting
the present and future needs of the Town of Moosomin,”
said Komarnicki. “This represents a very significant and
much needed investment to meet the continued economic growth
in Moosomin and area. I am pleased that we were able to secure
federal funding for this infrastructure project which will contribute
to our quality of life, as well as help to boost our regional
economy now and for years to come.”
“I am pleased that the provincial and federal governments
are working together to boost Saskatchewan’s economy while
getting shovel-ready projects going as soon as possible,”
said Toth. “These types of infrastructure investments
are important in ensuring our province has the capacity for
future growth.”
“This announcement is vital to the expansion, growth and
ultimately the success of our community going forward,”
said Larry Miskiman, Mayor of the Town of Moosomin. “We
are pleased for the contribution by both the federal and provincial
governments without which we wouldn’t be able to accomplish
a project of this magnitude for our community.”
The federal and provincial governments are accelerating infrastructure
spending across Saskatchewan providing funding to municipal
construction-ready projects. A total of 85 projects will receive
joint federal-provincial funding worth $86 million. With municipal
contributions included, the overall investment grows to $132
million. Projects being funded include drinking water upgrades,
local road improvements, and wastewater initiatives in many
communities across the province.
Under its Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is
allocating $12 billion to infrastructure projects across the
country. This is further complemented by an earlier commitment
of $33 billion to infrastructure.
Canada and Saskatchewan are working together to create jobs
and boost the economy, while making significant investments
that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments
have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are
delivered quickly and efficiently.
