Grenfell to Receive Over $762 Thousand in Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Funding for Water Supply and Treatment Plant Upgrade

Grenfell, Saskatchewan, June 29, 2009 – Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and to the Minister of Labour, and the Honourable Don Toth, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Moosomin and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, announced today that the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have each set aside $381,333.00 to support the water supply and treatment plant upgrade project in Grenfell.

“Our Government is making smart investments that will inject additional capital into our economy and keep people working during these tough economic times while at the same time meeting some very urgent present needs as well as the future needs of the Town of Grenfell,” said Komarnicki. “I am pleased that we were able to secure federal funding for this infrastructure project which will contribute to our quality of life, as well as help to boost our regional economy now and for years to come.”

“I am pleased that the provincial and federal governments are working together to boost Saskatchewan’s economy while getting shovel-ready projects going as soon as possible,” said Toth. “These types of infrastructure investments are important in ensuring our province has the capacity for future growth.”

“This project will ensure that we will have a safe and adequate drinking supply for years to come,” said Marc Saleski, Mayor of the Town of Grenfell. “The federal and provincial contribution is very welcome and much appreciated.”

The federal and provincial governments are accelerating infrastructure spending across Saskatchewan providing funding to municipal construction-ready projects. A total of 85 projects will receive joint federal-provincial funding worth $86 million. With municipal contributions included, the overall investment grows to $132 million. Projects being funded include drinking water upgrades, local road improvements, and wastewater initiatives in many communities across the province.

Under its Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is allocating $12 billion to infrastructure projects across the country. This is further complemented by an earlier commitment of $33 billion to infrastructure.

Canada and Saskatchewan are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are delivered quickly and efficiently.
