Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan Invest in
Broadview’s Recreational Infrastructure

Broadview, Saskatchewan – The Town of Broadview has moved forward with upgrades to its local rink thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Today, Don Toth, Speaker of the Saskatchewan Legislature and MLA for Moosomin, on behalf of the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs, and Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding for renovations to Broadview’s rink to improve the town’s recreational infrastructure.

“I am pleased to see the co-operative involvement of our provincial government with the federal government to enhance the quality of life in our communities,” said Toth. “Not only will today’s announcement create new opportunities, it will also address the long standing need for improvements for the facility so it can continue to operate as the heart of the community.”

“Our government’s investment in these upgrades to the Broadview rink through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program is great for the community of Broadview,” said Komarnicki. “The Broadview rink is an important part of the community as it provides a place where families, friends and neighbors can gather together for some great recreational and social time. These upgrades will ensure that the rink will be functional for years to come.”

Funding of $15,452 is being provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Saskatchewan is providing a matching contribution and the Town of Broadview is funding the balance for a total estimated project cost of over $46,000.

Upgrades to the Broadview rink include repairs to the roof of the lobby and the replacement of the furnace and water heater that will improve the energy efficiency of the facility and reduce operating costs. New doors will also be installed for the zamboni room.

“The Town of Broadview is very appreciative of the funding from our federal and provincial governments to support this upgrade to our community rink,” said Sid Criddle, Mayor of the Town of Broadview. “The work done to the facility will improve the energy efficiency of the building and will ensure the rink remains functional for many years to come.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in RinC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.

RInC is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative in the four western provinces.
