Ralph Goodale’s Leader, Stéphane Dion, and the Liberal
Party Considers Raising the GST Back to 7%

Ottawa (November 1, 2007)- Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament, Souris- Moose Mountain

The Liberals sat in the House of Commons and watched the Opposition and Government vote on the motion to implement the GST cut to 5%. On the same day that the cut to the GST passed, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion said that he would consider raising the GST if his party came back into power.

“Once he starts, when and where will the increases to the GST stop?” questioned Komarnicki. “This kind of thinking is precisely why we need a Conservative Government in Ottawa. Dion’s musing is consistent with the tax and spend philosophy that we saw under the former Liberal Government with Ralph Goodale as the finance minister. They were satisfied to tax Canadians and spend taxpayers’ dollars while Canadians worked hard to pay bills and struggled to stay ahead.”

By reducing the GST from 7% to 6% to 5%, Prime Minister Harper kept his election promise. A reduction to the GST is a tax cut that affects all Canadians regardless of age or income. Whether purchasing a coffee or a car, a computer or a new home, all Canadians will benefit.

The Liberal party has clearly grown accustomed to growing a big government at the expense of Canadian taxpayers’ hard earned dollars. Unlike Ralph Goodale and the Liberals, the Conservative Government isn’t wavering on its position when it comes to cutting taxes for Canadians.

“Canadians have a clear choice,” said Komarnicki. “They can choose between a Conservative Government that is committed to keeping more money in the pockets of every Canadian or the Liberals who will take Canadians back to high taxes to fund their out of control spending initiatives.”
