Estevan (April 28, 2007)-- Ed Komarnicki, M.P., Souris- Moose
Mountain
In celebration of Rail Safety Week, Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain today announced on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, that Canada’s New Government will provide more than $430,000 towards two safety improvement projects at railway crossings in the riding. The funding will go towards adding flashing lights, bells, gates and constant warning time devices at the College Avenue crossing in Midale and the East Access Road crossing in Broadview.
“Rail safety particularly at railway crossings should be a priority in all of our communities,” said Komarnicki. “It takes a shared effort between numerous partners including governments, rail companies and communities to ensure that our crossings are safe and are in proper working order. Although accident rates and crossing fatalities are down, we need to continue to work at making rail crossings safer for motorists and pedestrians.”
Komarnicki marked Rail Safety Week by paying
a visit to the Operation Lifesaver Display set up at the Estevan
Shoppers Mall. Operation Lifesaver is a public education program
of the Railway Association of Canada that has promoted safety
at railway crossings since 1981.
